Much love, Kaashi š
Soon, they reached home. Naina was still in Devanashās arms, her frail body curled into him, her arms locked around his neck as if she feared that letting go would make her fall apart. Her soft breaths were uneven, her face hidden in the crook of his neck.
As they reached the grand gates of the Rajpurohit mansion, a wave of anxious voices rushed toward them. Vedant, Sarita, Grandma, and Meghana hurried to the entrance, their faces clouded with worry.
A Family in Panic
Grandma: "Kaisi hai meri bachchi?"
"How is my child?"
Her aged voice trembled with concern, eyes scanning Nainaās face as if searching for answers in the shadows under her eyes.
Meghana: "Kaisa hai mera bachcha?"
"How is my baby?"
Her motherly instincts kicked in immediately. She reached out, touching Nainaās forehead, her fingers lingering over the damp strands of hair sticking to her skin.
Sarita: "Kahi dard ho raha hai kya?"
"Are you feeling any pain?"
There was a softness in Saritaās voice, a kind of gentleness that only a mother could offer.
Vedant: "Bhai, Bhabhi ko upar leke chalo jaldi! Doctor aa gaye hain!"
"Brother, take Bhabhi upstairs quickly! The doctor is here!"
His urgency jolted everyone. Devanash tightened his grip on Naina and strode inside, his heart pounding.
The doctor arrived soon after and insisted that everyone step outside. But as Devanash tried to move, he felt Naina's grip tighten.
She wasnāt letting go.
She was still curled into him, her small fingers digging into his shirt. Even in unconsciousness, she sought his warmth, his protection.
"Nainaā¦" he whispered, trying to pull back just a little, but she whimpered in response. His heart squeezed painfully at the sound.
She was scared. Terrified.
With great patience, he cupped her face and pressed his lips to her forehead. "Iāll be right outside," he murmured, his voice soft but firm.
It took several moments, but finally, with great reluctance, she loosened her hold. The moment she did, Meghana stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Naina and pulling her into her chest.
Naina didnāt resist.
She melted into Meghanaās warmth, curling into her like a lost child seeking the comfort of her mother.
A Mother's Embrace
Meghana: "Aa, mera bachcha... Kuch nahi hoga... Maa hai na?"
"Come here, my child... Nothing will happen... Your mother is here, isnāt she?"
Meghana ran her fingers through Nainaās hair, whispering soothing words, rocking her gently.
Sarita stood frozen, watching them.
Something inside her crackedāshattered into a million pieces. The sight of Naina clinging to Meghana for motherly comfort made her realize how deep this girl's pain ran.
Sarita: "Beta, kuch khao gi? Main bana du?"
"Dear, will you eat something? Should I make it for you?"
Silence.
Naina didnāt even lift her head.
Grandma: "Bacche aise nahi rote..."
"Children donāt cry like this..."
Her voice wavered, as if she, too, was holding back tears.
Vedant: "Bhabhi, yaar... Aise mat rona... Main bhiĀ ro dunga!"
"Bhabhi, please donāt cry like this... Iāll also cry with you..
Vedantās lighthearted words carried a desperate attempt to lift the heavy air, but they fell into an abyss of silence.
Naina remained still.
Broken.
The Doctorās Verdict
The doctor finally stepped out, adjusting his glasses. His face was unreadable, but his words sent a dagger through Devanashās chest.
Doctor: "Mr. Rajpurohit, your wife is physically fine, but I need to conduct a full-body checkup. She is scared, and this may not be the first time she has been through something like this."
A thick silence settled over the hall.
Doctor: "I will prescribe some medicine and a gel for the marks on her legs and hands. But take care of herāshe needs you the most right now."
The world seemed to fade around Devanash.
His hands curled into tight fists at his sides, his jaw clenched so hard it ached. His blood boiled with silent fury.
This wasnāt the first time?
What had she been through before? Who had done this to her?
His vision darkened. His rage, lethal and unforgiving, coiled inside him like a venomous snake.
Whoever was behind thisā¦
They would pay.
With their blood.
Without another word, he turned on his heel and strode toward the room.
The moment he stepped inside, his eyes softened.
Naina was asleep, curled into Meghanaās embrace, her fingers still gripping her saree like a lifeline. She looked so small, so fragile, as if even the slightest touch could shatter her completely.
Devanash walked closer, kneeling beside the bed. He gently brushed a few strands of hair away from her face. Her face was peaceful in sleep, but the dried tear stains on her cheeks told a different story.
He exhaled sharply.
He had failed her today.
But never again.
He would fix this.
He would fix everything.
Devanash carefully tucked Naina into bed, ensuring she was comfortable before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. His touch lingered for a moment, his heart heavy with the sight of her fragile form. Then, reluctantly, he stepped away.
As he walked out, he found everyone gathering in the hall as per Grandmaās command. The atmosphere was thick with tension, a storm brewing just beneath the surface.
At that moment, Aaradhya, Suryaveer, Pratap, and Kunal entered, their expressions a mix of concern and urgency. But it was Aaradhya who stood outāher head was bowed low, her fingers twisting the fabric of her dress. Guilt clung to her like a shadow.
Grandma: "Aaradhya, beta, I know you're feeling guilty, but it was not your fault."
"Aaradhya, my child, I know you feel guilty, but this wasnāt your fault."
Aaradhya sniffled, shaking her head. Tears glistened in her eyes as she whispered brokenly,
Aaradhya: "No, Dadisa... Mujhe zyada careful rehna chahiye tha⦠Agar Bhabhi ko kuch ho jata toh? Main khud ko kabhi maaf nahi kar patiā¦"
"No, Grandma⦠I should have been more careful⦠What if something had happened to Bhabhi? I would never be able to forgive myselfā¦"
Before anyone could speak, Devanash stepped forward, his voice firm yet filled with warmth.
Devanash: "Princess, it was not your fault. Stop crying. If your Bhabhi sees you like this, she wonāt spare anyone who made her best friend cry."
A small, wobbly smile tugged at Aaradhyaās lips, though her eyes were still damp. Meghana, Suryaveer, Pratap, Sarita, Kunal, and Vedant all gathered around her, offering words of reassurance. They urged her to narrate everything from the beginning.
With a deep breath, Aaradhya recounted the entire incidentāevery small detail, every moment of fear. And then, she spoke of the unknown girl who had stepped in to help.
For a moment, silence blanketed the hall.
Then, in unison, everyone murmured words of gratitude for the mysterious stranger who had helped Aaradhya and Naina.
Author be like:
"Yeah toh mera farz thaaā¦"
(Well, that was my dutyā¦)
The gratitude quickly melted into something far more dangerousāanger.
Saritaās face darkened, her hands curling into tight fists. A fire burned in her eyes, the kind that promised destruction.
Sarita: "Kunal, take me to that bastard. I will deal with him myself!"
Her voice was sharp, unforgiving. A motherās wrath was a terrifying thing, and Sarita was known for her brutality when it came to punishment.
Suryaveer: "Saruu, don't lose your control."
His tone was a warning, but Sarita was beyond reasoning.
Sarita: "Jee, Bhai Sa⦠Saaā¦"
"Yes, Brother⦠butā¦"
She clenched her fists tighter, her body trembling with suppressed rage.
Pratap, who had been watching her closely, immediately reached for her hand. His strong, steady grip enveloped her trembling fingers, grounding her. She looked up at him, her stormy gaze meeting his calm one.
For a moment, there was a silent battle of wills between them. But Pratapās presence had always been her anchor. Slowly, Sarita exhaled, allowing herself to calm down, though the fire in her eyes didnāt extinguishāit merely waited.
Devanash, who had been quiet all this time, finally spoke. His voice was steady, but there was a lethal edge to it.
Devanash: "Main room mein Naina ke paas ja raha hoon."
"Iām going to the room, to be with Naina."
Without waiting for a response, he turned on his heel and strode away.
Because right now, while the fire of revenge burned within him, his first priority was the fragile girl lying in his bedāhis wife, his responsibility, his everything.
Devanash stepped into the dimly lit room, his heart tightening at the sight before him. His wifeāhis lifeālay curled up on the bed, her fragile body trembling as she murmured in a broken voice, as if lost in a nightmare.
"Don't leave me⦠don'tā¦"
His chest clenched painfully. Without wasting another second, he rushed to her side, his hands instinctively reaching for hers. He grasped her delicate fingers, his grip firm yet filled with warmth, as if anchoring her back to reality.
"Baby, nothing will happen⦠see, I am here⦠your Ansh is hereā¦"
Her eyelids fluttered open, and the moment she saw him, recognition flickered in her eyes, quickly replaced by sheer relief. She didnāt waste another second before throwing herself into his arms, clutching onto him like he was her only lifeline.
He held her tightly, whispering soft reassurances against her hair.
"Baby, I am here⦠see, nothing will happenā¦"
But she wouldnāt stop crying. Her sobs shook her entire body, and he could feel his shirt dampening with her tears. His heart ached at her pain, an unbearable weight pressing against his chest. He cupped her face, wiping her tears gently with his thumbs.
"Stop crying, mi Todo⦠it hurts like someone has stabbed my heartā¦"
"Please donāt cry⦠loveā¦"
Naina slowly lifted her tear-streaked face from his chest, looking at him with eyes full of fear and hesitation. Her lips trembled as she whispered,
"You will leave me⦠right? I am impure nowā¦"
Devanash stiffened. His eyes darkened with a mix of fury and agony. Who had dared to put such disgusting thoughts into her mind?
"Baby, who told you these kinds of shitty things? And I am not leaving you. Okay?"
Naina hiccupped, her voice barely above a whisper, sounding so much like a lost child.
"But you will leave me⦠because I⦠I was touched by another manā¦"
His jaw clenched, his entire body going rigid. The very idea of her feeling like this, of someone daring to harm her, made his blood boil. His voice was firm but laced with pain.
"Naina, what the hell are you thinking? I am not leaving you!"
His voice was sharper now, and the moment she heard it, she flinched, shrinking back. His heart shattered into pieces when she whimpered,
"See? Youāre already raising your voice at me⦠later, you will hit me too, just like my brother didā¦"
Her words knocked the air out of his lungs. His grip on her tightenedānot in anger, but in a desperate attempt to hold her together, to shield her from the ghosts of her past. His arms wrapped around her small frame protectively, pressing her against his heart.
His voice was thick with rage, not at her, but at the people who had hurt her.
"I am not leaving you, and cowards and losers raise hands at womenā¦"
His words were fierce, yet his hold on her was nothing but tender. He gently kissed the top of her head, his fingers running through her hair to calm her down.
"Baby, donāt cryā¦"
Naina pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes with so much vulnerability it broke him all over again.
"You wonāt leave me, right? I am not impure⦠right?"
His gaze softened, and he held her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away the lingering tears. His voice was nothing but a whispered promise.
"If mere touch could make someone impure, then my very breath should be impure too, because I live within you."
"So what if someone touched you? Your soul is still mine, your every feeling still belongs to me."
"I loved you, I love you, and as long as my veins carry blood, I will keep loving you."
"You were mine, you are mine, and you will always be mine⦠forever."
With these words, he leaned forward and pressed the softest of kisses on both her eyelids, as if sealing his promise. Then, he kissed both her cheeks, trying to erase the stains of her pain.
Naina let out a shaky breath, clinging onto him desperately.
"Ansh⦠hold me close⦠I am scaredā¦"
He didnāt hesitate. He pulled her into his lap, cradling her like she was the most precious thing in his life.
"I am here, mi Todo⦠I am with youā¦"
She hesitated for a moment before whispering against his chest,
"Donāt let me go⦠kiss me⦠pleaseā¦"
He smiled softly, brushing his lips against her hair.
"You have all rights over me, mi Todo⦠you can kiss me whenever you want⦠but after this, you will answer one of my questions."
She nodded without hesitation. And with that, Devanash cupped her face gently, kissing her with the utmost care, pouring all his love, all his devotion, into that one kiss.
And in that moment, she knewāshe was safe. She was loved. And nothing could ever change that.
Devanash pulled Naina close, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, as if grounding her in his presence. His lips still tingled from their kiss, but more than that, his heart swelled at the way she clung to him, her body melting against his.
Wanting to lighten the atmosphere, he smirked and tilted his head playfully, his fingers tracing soothing patterns on her back.
"Baby, you love my lips more than meā¦"
Naina instantly pulled back, her eyes widening in shock before narrowing at his teasing words. Her cheeks, already warm from their earlier moment, flushed even deeper. She gasped, swatting his arm.
"Huh, besharmā¦"
"Huh, shamelessā¦"
Devanash let out a dramatic sigh, shaking his head as if deeply wronged. His eyes twinkled with mischief as he brought a hand to his lips, gently brushing them as if trying to protect their dignity.
"I am shameless? Oh no, my love⦠you stripped away the dignity of my lips like a piece of clothing⦠that too at the airport! What about that, huh?"
His mock scandalized expression made her want to punch him and hide in embarrassment at the same time. She huffed, crossing her arms over her chest, her nose scrunching up in defiance.
"Did I ever force you to marry me? This is just how I am! And be grateful I forgave youāthat itself is a big thing. If it were some other girl, she wouldnāt have forgiven you for life!"
Her voice dropped to a low grumble at the end, but he caught every single word. His smirk faded, replaced by something softer, something warmer.
Devanash reached up, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers grazing her skin in the lightest of touches. His gaze held hers, deep and unwavering, as if he wanted to carve his next words into her very soul.
In a hushed, intimate whisper, he murmured, "Thank you for everything⦠and I will never regret marrying you. And why would there ever be any other girl in my life? With me, always and forever, it will only be my mi Todo⦠my Naina."
Nainaās heart skipped a beat. A warmth, so deep and consuming, spread through her chest. The way he said itāso effortlessly, like an undeniable truthāmade her eyes sting with unshed tears.
She looked up at him, her lips curving into a small, tender smile. Without another word, she leaned in, resting her forehead against his, breathing him in, her fingers tightening over the fabric of his shirt.
And in that moment, she knewāthis man, her Ansh, was hers. Just as much as she was his.
Devanash pulled Naina into his arms again, holding her so tightly as if he could absorb all her pain, as if his warmth could shield her from every cruel memory that haunted her soul. His fingers trembled as they cupped her face, his touch gentle, his heart shattering at the fear in her eyes.
"Mi Todo, tell me⦠who fed you those words?"
Nainaās lips parted, but the words refused to come out. Her throat tightened, the ghosts of her past clawing at her, dragging her back to the suffocating darkness. She lowered her gaze, fingers gripping the front of his shirt like a lifeline.
"Wohā¦"
"Thatā¦"
Devanash exhaled, his jaw clenching as he rested his forehead against hers. His voice softened, yet his grip on her tightened.
"Baby, tell me. I promise, I wonāt lose my control. I wonāt do anything rash. I just want to share your pain⦠please."
His words broke the dam she had held up for so long. A sob tore from her throat as she clung to him, burying her face in his chest, inhaling his scent like it was the only thing keeping her alive.
"My mother told meā¦"
She took a shuddering breath, her body trembling in his arms.
"You know Ashok? He is the brother of my sister-in-law⦠he used to visit our house often. At first, everything seemed fine. Even bhabhi used to be kind to me⦠she never really cared, but at least she never raised her voice at me."
Devanash felt his heartbeat quicken, sensing the storm that was about to break.
"But one day⦠I was returning from the office and saw her with a man. They were hugging⦠like lovers. At first, I thought⦠maybe he was just a friend. But later, I saw him inside our house when my brother and mother werenāt home."
Her breathing hitched as the memory played like a horror film in her mind.
"I confronted her⦠and she admitted it. She looked me in the eye and admitted she was having an extramarital affair⦠and then she laughed. She mocked me, Devanash."
Her fingers tightened into fists.
"She asked meāwho would believe me? My own brother and mother treat me worse than a servant."
Devanash could hear the raw pain in her voice, the bitterness that clung to every word.
"Still, I tried⦠I tried to make them see. I went to my brother. To my mother. But instead of listening to me⦠he slapped me."
A strangled breath left Devanash.
"No⦠he didnāt just slap me⦠he beat me, Devanash. My own brother."
She let out a broken laugh, but there was no humor in it. Only unbearable agony.
"And my mother⦠she stood there. Watching. Enjoying it."
Something inside Devanash snapped. His entire body tensed, his hands shaking as he held her. His mind screamed for blood, but he forced himself to stay silent, to listen.
"A week later, Ashok came over for some work. Bhai wasnāt home. He entered my room and⦠andā¦"
Her entire body convulsed in his arms. She couldnāt even say it.
Her silence was louder than any scream.
"He tried to rape me."
Devanash stopped breathing. His entire world tilted.
"One of the servants heard me screaming⦠he saved me. But instead of punishing Ashok, my motherā¦"
Her voice trembled, breaking into pieces.
"She apologized to him. My brother did too."
A low, menacing growl built in Devanashās chest.
"And my sister-in-law⦠she slapped me. She called me a whore, said I was trying to seduce her brother."
"Then they fired the servant who saved me."
His nails dug into his palms, his teeth clenched so hard he could feel the pressure in his skull.
"And then⦠my mother slapped me too. Called me a burden. Said I was impure⦠said no man would ever love me. And my brother⦠heā¦"
A fresh sob tore through her, her small frame shaking violently.
"He beat me with a belt. Over and over again. I begged⦠I cried⦠but no one listened, Devanash. No one."
That was it.
The last thread of his restraint snapped.
His entire body burned with rage, his vision turning dark. His arms around her tightened like steel. His voice, when it finally came, was raw, guttural, filled with pure fury.
"I will kill all of them with my own hands!"
He pulled back, gripping her shoulders, his chest heaving with the weight of his emotions. His eyesāwild, murderousāsearched hers.
"My little jaanā¦you went through so much, and you are still trying to save them?"
Nainaās lips quivered, her head shaking frantically.
"Papa ke baad wohi reh gaye the⦠aur main anath nahi thiā¦"
"After Papa⦠they were the only ones left⦠and I didnāt want to be an orphanā¦"
Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it struck him like a blade straight through the heart.
Devanash let out a ragged breath, his anger replaced by something even deeperāunbearable pain.
"You were never an orphan, love."
His hands cradled her face, his thumbs wiping away the endless stream of tears.
"You were never alone. You had me⦠you have me. And I swear, on every breath I take, I will make them pay for every single tear they made you shed."
He pulled her into his embrace, holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world. And to him, she was.
Naina clung to him, sobbing into his chest. And in that moment, she knewāshe wasnāt alone anymore. She never would be.
Bachha love's tear-filled eyes searched Devanashās face, seeking answers he wished he had. Her voice trembled, raw and full of anguish, as her fingers dug into his shirt.
"Why is a woman guilty until she is proven innocent⦠but a man is never guilty until he is proven guilty?"
Her broken sobs filled the silence between them, each word a dagger to his heart.
"Why, Ansh? Why? Why is society like this? Why do women always have to suffer? Why do we always have to prove our worth, our purity, our truth⦠while men walk free without question?"
Her voice cracked, her pain unraveling like an open wound. She wasnāt just crying for herselfāshe was crying for every woman who had been silenced, for every girl who had been made to carry the burden of a crime she never committed.
Devanash felt his throat tighten, his hands gripping her shoulders as if grounding her to him. His eyes darkened, filled with a storm of emotionsārage, helplessness, and an unyielding need to protect her.
"Because society was built by cowards,Ā love." His voice was rough, pained. "By men too weak to take responsibility for their sins, so they placed the blame on women instead. Because people find it easier to question a womanās dignity than to accept a manās crime."
His fingers curled into fists, his entire body tense with suppressed fury.
"But they are wrong. They have always been wrong. And I swear, bachha loveāthis world might have failed you, but I never will. I will fight for you, I will stand by you, and I will make sure that those who hurt you regret ever breathing."
He cupped her face, forcing her to look into his eyes, his voice trembling with intensity.
"You donāt need to prove your innocence to anyone, Mi Todo. You were never guilty to begin with."
Tears slipped down her cheeks, and for the first time in years, she felt something other than paināshe felt seen.
